The Time had come.....

Stew the Rooster is no more!
**Some photos show graphic images**

Stew was hurting some the hens. He was eating feed and not producing anything but crowing. (Not that the crowing bothered me...) He just wasn't pulling his weight around the homestead.
So the time had come for Stew to make a contribution.

We rung his neck. Plucked his feathers. And dressed him out.

Of course stew was destined for the stew pot.

In his honor, I whipped up a batch of homemade egg noodles.

The final result, Stew made a mighty fine pot of chicken noodles
~or as they call in here in the South~ Chicken Pastry.

Thank you Stew. You taught us many things.

  4. We've only slaughtered one chicken, a rooster. My manchild was playing with the feet while my DH was finishing up. Suddenly from out of the blue he said, "Momma I don't feel so good anymore." Of course our ladybug was in her room crying her eyes out. Go figure, they can eat a chicken they haven't met, but not one they knew personally.

  5. I'd like to know how to prepare a home-raised chook. It's just not something you learn in suburbia.

  6. I know that's exactly how the chicken ended up on my table last night, but I don't think I could eat anything I personally raised. I get too emotionally involved.

  8. I like my chicken soup as much as the next person, but I don't like to see where my meat comes from. My cousin raises pigs to show, then butchers them. I can't eat them. I refuse to. I tried once and gagged on it.

Cleaning a chicken from the grocery is even tough for me...
