Immediate Action Needed

Once again, my friend~ Robbyn at The Back Forty has let us know what is going on with important issues reguarding our rights as citizens and our food supply.

For her complete post click on the above link.
Why am I sending you there? What is NAIS? Who cares?
I am sending you there because she has put the information in a clear, easy to understand manner.... I can't improve it ~ so why try. Click on her link!
The NAIS is "National Animal Identification System". One more governmental control on how we supply food to ourselves..... basically a system to shut down small self sustaining farmers and homesteaders.
This is from No NAIS . org
1. NAIS does NOTHING to address food safety issues from the
processor to the consumer.it simply moves the burden from corporate meat
packers, who don’t follow the rules, to independent livestock producers.
2.
Missouri’s Family Farmers believe it is extremely important to ensure consumer
confidence in the safety and health of the U.S. food supply while at the same
time ensuring the economic viability of independent livestock producers. But NAIS
does not meet the needs of producers or consumers.
3. The majority (>92%)
of family farmers in Missouri (and the rest of the nation) are opposed to
NAIS.
4. The Truth About Animal ID.: Creates an undue economic burden on
producers, does not include identification of imported meats, does nothing to
increase consumer choice or confidence, expands packers ability to unfairly
discriminate against family farmers.
There is alot of information about NAIS out there... research it yourself.
Why should you care? You have to eat too.... where does your food come from? How expensive has it become to feed your family? How wholesome are the foods you eat? Does government control too much already?
I want to be able to have a cow and milk it and drink the milk..... if the USDA has their way ..... the small homestead is history!

Summer Barbeque

Coffee Barbecue Sauce Recipe

1/2 cup brewed espresso or strong, dark
coffee
1 cup
ketchup

1/2 cup
cider vinegar

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped, about 1 cup
2 cloves
garlic
, peeled and crushed
3 fresh hot chili peppers, such as jalapeno, or hotter if desired, seeded
2 tablespoons hot
dry mustard
mixed with 1 tablespoon warm water
2 tablespoons
Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons chili powder

Put all of the ingredients in a small pot, stir them together, and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Lower the heat so the mixture is just simmering and let simmer for 20 minutes. Remove the pot form the heat, let the mixture cool, then puree it in a blender or food processor fitted with the steel blade.

The barbecue sauce can be covered and refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

For my friend, Lacy at Razor Family Farms!

UPDATE: This sauce is good for anytime you would use a traditional tomato based bbq sauce. Ribs, chops, chicken, dunk a nuggect, etc.

Did I Ever Tell You?

I LOVE Sunflowers!

These are photos taken in my sunflower garden by the front porch.

We originally planted sunflowers to provide some shade,

along with beauty, from the early morning sun coming

over the horizon of the trees to the east. But, I have really

come to enjoy these towering beauts. I get teased alot when

I grab the camera and start shooting. Oh welll....

I LOVE my Sunflowers!

Harvet Day!!!!

The garlic is ready!!!! This is longest wait of the year. Garlic is planted in mid November. Harvest is usually in July!
I guess I should have put something along side these two beautiful specimins. They are about the size of a closed fist.
MMMMMMMMM more garlic!
Garlic drying!

Well, if you haven't guessed, I love garlic. Until you try organically grown garlic from your own dirt.... you have no idea! No vampire is gonna get me!!!!

The moral of the story is.....

A Farmer and His Donkey

One day a farmer’s donkey fell into a well. The jackass cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, the farmer decided the donkey was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited his neighbors to come over to help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began shoveling dirt into the well. At first the donkey realized what was going on and cried horribly. Then to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer looked down into the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel full of dirt that hit is back, the donkey was doing something amazing, something remarkable. He would shake it off and take a step up. Shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer and his neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, the donkey would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was astonished as the donkey stepped over the edge of the well and happily trotted off! Now life is going to shovel dirt on you, sometimes lots of dirt. But the trick to get along well is to shake it off and take a step up. Shake it off and take a step up. Shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. If you look at it this way, then we can get out of our deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up, and shaking it off and taking a step up.

5 Simple Steps To Being Happy

So are you ready to shake it off and take a step up?

1. Free your heart from hatred-And forgive
2. Free your mind from worries-Most things never happen
3. Live simply and appreciate what you have
4. Give more
5. Expect less

End of the story….

The donkey came back later and bit the heck out of the farmer. Unfortunately, the gashes from the bites became severely infected, and farmer became very sick.

Moral of the story…

When you do something wrong and try to cover your ass, it’s always going to come right back and bite you!

Shake it off and take a step up!

Summer is finally here!

Hello my friends!
Life can be very hectic at times.
The new job is going to work out well.
Tonight, I took a few minutes to check out things around the homestead.
Above is the first sunflower of the season.
It is a lemon queen. I love my sunflowers!

These are my cabernet grapes. This is their 3rd year.
The grapes are much bigger this year.

The garlic is beginning to turn. It will be harvest time soon!

The basil and the cherry tomato in the aquaponics are huge!

I can't believe how well they are doing! This is a mixed lettuce bed.

Started from seed about 3 weeks ago.

The corn is growing nicely. My favorite summer hot veggie.

The tomatoes and gourds are doing great.
The leaves on the gourds are huge.

The chicks keep growing. They went through 50 lbs of chick feed in less than 2 months.
It is usually hot here in NC.

These are my panting chicks!

Best wishes to all! I hope your summer is going well!

Christina

Quick Post!

Spinach!

My sweetie had a surprise for me when I got home
from my last day at the furniture job.

He harvested out first batch of spinach. He said, "I don't know how to cook it for you". I told him not to worry. So I looked in the pantry and the fridge and said "mmmmmmmmmm". I put on a pot of rice, I shredded the chicken thighs he had baked, and pulled out a bit of bacon. This is what happened:

Fried bacon (just a bit-1 slice chopped up)
Added that beautiful spinach
Steamed it for about 30 seconds with a tablespoon of broth
Served it over a bed of rice, with the shredded chicken on top

Sweetie was flabbergasted at the gastronomical delight that ended up on the plate.
Simple. From the garden. Delicious.
