What's up on the homestead?

Seriously, now, somebody needs to go to camera anonymous!

Last night, we let the chickens out of their coop to run around the yard... I laughed and laughed. Most of the pictures were too blurry from laughing. But here is a little photo journal of their little excursion! I hope you enjoy them!

Dinner tonight.... brats on the grill fresh corn and beans from the garden. MMMM good!

What is a post without the current SUNFLOWER? We picked the first gourds off the vine today. Let 'em dry and onto bird houses! Yee Haa!

I gotta new toy! A bread maker.... yummy!

Have a great night all!

Ps.... don't forget the contest ends the 31st. Make sure you post on the contest post to let me know you are in!

Do we REALLY understand?

.... about the effects of genetically modified foods affect US, not the world in general, but you and me! How does it affect your life? Any clue? Well, there are no studies out there that I have been able to find that says that GM foods are good for you. Studies talk around it and say it is not bad for you. Well, the foods that I eat I want to be good for me. Here are some more articles that m~ from The Suburban Farmer led me to which let me to some others. As always I want to thank my blog friends for sending out the word.

I read some of the excerpts from World Hunger so I bought it. It is on its way. I look forward to sharing insights from this book in future posts. As always, I am very interested in reading more. So my friends.... send me any links that come your way. I truly appreciate it.

Now I am late for work... must run. I hope everyone has GMO free day!

Petition to Support U.S. Food Agenda 2015

By signing this petition , I call on U.S. elected officials, political candidates, and regulatory agencies to pursue the following three public policies:

(1) Moratorium on all genetically engineered foods & crops unless adequate safety-testing proves they are safe for human health & the environment. The FDA should require all GE foods to be labeled and safety-tested.

(2) Begin the phase-out of industrial agriculture's damaging practices by banning the most dangerous pesticides as well as hormone implants, antibiotics and rendered animal protein in animal feed. Ban corporate feedlots and intensive confinement of farm animals.

(3) Implement a long-term "transition to organic" program to shift agricultural production in the US from chemical-intensive, industrial farming to at least 30% organic by the year 2015.

A Summer Evening ....

...On The Homestead

It was a lovely Saturday evening, I got home from work.
Sugar and I went out to talk to the chickens.

We decided that is was a lovely day for a walk about the garden.

We stopped and admired the sunflowers.
We noted how big the rape seed and sweet potatoes were.
.
The gourds are going to make some beautiful bird houses.
Then we noticed some critters on the basil and lettuce.
OMY!

Then it was time for dinner.

The coals were lit and the steaks put on the fire.
Then what did we see.....

are those grey clouds rolling in very fast?
The steaks ... what will happen?

Just grab an umbrella and keep on cookin'!
MMMMMM yummy!

Hope y'all have a great night!

Powerful Words.....

There is a blog I absolutely adore... unfortunately her blog and my computer do not get along well. Well today, I has access to another computer and got to read some of her recent posts. YEAH!

At life in the lost world... I read jaydee's post the battle is going mainstream... talking about finding a non gmo product and the post why i do what i do... in this post she referred to a post by Granny Miller, Why I Do It talking about why it is better to raise your own food (meat, especially) I am no where as eloquent as either of these ladies. Please visit their blogs and read their words. I am profoundly affected by both of the ladies.

We are in the process of building a homestead. We garden (organically), we raise chickens (for eggs and eventually meat), and we are planning the pigs....

Millions Against Monsanto

I know this really great Lady, her name is Robbyn of The Back Forty, she has a blog that has so opened my eyes. A few months ago I first hear about a company called Monsanto, the most recognizable product they put out is a herbicide called RoundUp. How many of us have grabbed a bottle of that to kill a weed or two around the house? Guilty. I was not always so enlightened. But if that was all this multi national corporation had done to the peoples of this world, it would still be bad.

Unfortunately, these are really, really, really BAD people.

They take our food seed and chop up the dna and rearrange it. Tell us we can only use certain things to produce it with. Sue us, when we are not using their GMO seed, if we accidentally get a seed from one their strains in our fields. Contaminate crops world wide so that native species can no longer be grown while the inhabitants of that area starve. And it goes on......

Anyway here is the link to Robbyn's article ~ it is a must read for anyone interested in having a say in our future food production. Yes~this can does affect us NOW in our lives. Food costs and availability are directly related to Monsanto's immoral and unethical and criminal behavior!

"Debunking The Propaganda: Genetically Modified Plants No Answer to the World Food Crisis"

I get really mad and upset when I think of the travesties that are allowed to happen.

Links to some past posts on this subject. Once again.... and Bio Engineered.....

Thank you Robbyn!

Sitting here with my coffee and Technorati

Rambling and Ranting from a Crazy person.... haaaaheeeehoooo (are you sure you want to read this?)

I don't know how important Technorati is. But we all like to measure. How many visitors. Rate this. Rate that. etc etc....

Well, I picked up a few friends at bloglog and fuelme.. blogcatalog has been pretty active along. I put a couple of counters on a couple of months or so ago. I ditched one. The one I have up now says that I have had 2,111 visits... pretty cool, since sometime in May, I think. On June 6th I add a post about the Technorati Experiment. My rating was 7 at the time. On July 8th, I got in on the ground floor of the New LinkBack Project. My technorati has gone from 24 to 85 in 9 days.... Amazing.

Now with EntreCard and SezWho, I am getting more comments. I don't know. Why blog? Who cares? I don't know. I enjoy it. But is it really worth the time? Who's life has been enriched by reading my words. Yeah, I know some of you like my photos. I would love to generate some income from the time I have invested. My contest has only had a few participants. (I have one person that I met because of the contest~a fellow coffee lover, that is fantastic. I guess the time, the effort has been justified by that.)

I really would like to get more traffic to the website. I was hoping that I could generate more income there. I have a second site on the verge of opening. Will it just get lost in the see of amateur dot coms out there? Will people be interested in my product? I don't know. Just rambling on.

At one time in my life, I had the opportunity to be a stay at home mom/wife/person. I could have taken the innitiative and done it. I would be where I really want to be now. Now, it just seems very, very far away. Don't get me wrong.... I finally have a great job. One that has ethics close to my own, where I can make a decent living. I just want to have the time to bake the bread, earn a little $, tend the garden, earn a little $. Being outside the home, home stuff just doesn't get the priority it should.

Well thanks for reading my rambles today. Don't feel sorry for me. I just needed to write. And you, lucky readers, got to read it! I hope everyone has a great day! Blog ON!

Live Earthworms

Compost Gardening Fishing Worms

Put these amazing little creatures to work for you. I do not till my soil but rather maintain a thick layer of mulch that feeds the earthworms and in turn, the earthworms feed the soil. I found that tilling just brings new weed seeds to the surface to spout. The mulch also holds the moisture in and makes it difficult for weeds to sprout.

What To On The Homestead Between Chores...

PLAY CRIBBAGE!!!

What is Cribbage you might ask? Just a board with pegs and holes and a deck of cards.....

Yeah, there is more to it than that. You have to be able to count! Deal 6 cards to each player. ( you can have upto 4~our board only has two lanes). The dealer is the "crib" holder. Each player keeps 4 cards and puts 2 in the "crib". A player who is not the "crib" holder cuts a card from the remaining deck. That card is used in each players hand during that round of play. A jack cut is always 2 points to the "crib" holder. The pegs start out in home base, as you score points you move your peg the number of holes of the points you scored. Points are scored a number of ways. Runs of three or more. (you can have double or more runs) Also pairs, trips and 4 of kind scores. And combinations of card that add up to 15.
This particular hand is a quadruple run. 4 runs of 3 cards = 12 points 2 pairs = 4 points and 4 combinations of 15 = 8 points For a total of 24 points.... this is a great hand!
This is the primo ~ best hand ever~ the one to kill for!
THE 29 HAND 8 15's for 16 points 6 pairs of 5s for 12 points and the NIBS for 1 point. When you have a jack that matches the cut card it is 1 point.

Here are some sites with more details.... It is a fun game. More interesting than TV & cheaper than the movies. It's something to do when it's raining and you can't be outside! Try it ~ have fun!

What can I say? I love my sunflowers. I love my camera.

I was playing in b/w and setting f stops and apetures and what ever else you can do in a manual mode. So this is what you get~~a study of sunflower! I had fun hope you enjoy looking it!!!

...While I am here... and I have a couple more sunflowers ~ with the bees no less! *evil laugh!*

Off to work.... time to create havoc there! Have a great day everybody!

Words from Mexico

My son, Brian, who is in grad school at the University of Florida, took off for Mexico the 22nd of June. Well, FINALLY, some communication from him. He posted this entry on his my space blog. I thought I would share it with you! (picture of said son and his nieces, my grandbabies!)

- Merida, Mexico Current mood: accomplished
Hello, my friends and
family! Buenos dias! I am completely enjoying myself in the Yucatan, at my home
in Merida. Mama Margarita takes care of me, always ensuring I have had enough
grains and vegetables to eat, and enough sodium to help keep me hydrated.
Mondays, Tuesdays and Wedsdays are school days...Ecology/Anthropology and
Spanish. Classes are going well. The weekends are for excursions, and they (two
so far) have been wonderful. Before a single day in the classroom we all set out
for the carribean coast, visiting the Mayan ruins of Ek Balam, Tulum and Coba.
They were beautiful and reverent. The sights have been breathtaking, and the
work involved in climbing to the top of some of them has been well worth the
effort. The heat and humidity here is insane, though! It's a lot of work to stay
healthy and protected from the sun. This past weeked we went along the Puuc
Route, visiting more ruins, some cenotes and caves, and generally having some
other wonderful experiences. One of the sweetest parts of the trip so far has
been all the maverick women we've met. From women initiating community building
projects (a school for the young and a recycled paper operation to support it)
against the tradition of the region to a woman who divorced her husband and is
spearheading an effort to teach women to keep successful kitchen gardens and
keep bees. We also visited a regional school for ecological agriculture, and
toured the facility - which is almost completely self-sufficient. We've packed a
lot in so far, and I'm excited for more! Pictures (spectacular) coming
soon?

New LinkBack Project!

This is a simple procedure. You might have seen it done elsewhere on a few scarce weblogs. What is different, is that when we reach a certain point on the list, we start yet another one. Instead of one master list and its done, we will repeat the process over and over again, with new folks jumping on board. These backlinks combined with the social networking friends status will affect all areas of search engine algorithims.

To participate is simple:

—>Copy The Post & List below into a blog post of yours.
—>Add Your Link to the list at the bottom.
—>Comment On the original post at LBP so that I can update the list with your link.
—>Make sure the list links and names are in place on your weblog post.
—>Digg, Stumble, Tag, and Reddit all of us, spread the word, get more on board.
—>Be sure to send them back to The Linkback Project for the updated list.

Changes....

Some of my regular friends may have noticed. I have been tweaking the blog. Not to worry. I just want less junk. More good. I have tried several times to import a 3 column template. Cannot do.... I went to word press. I would have to totally rewrite the css to get what I wanted there. So I will be playing around a bit for the next few days until I get what I want. I know a little html. So can play around in the html parameters of blogger. Wish me luck!

Rain at the homestead...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.... I got camera happy today!
We have been in drought conditions in North Carolina for several years now. This spring we have been blessed and the water levels in the streams, rivers, lakes, and aquafers have risen. I think they might let us drink a little soon! But anyway, Me and my camera decided we wanted to get a picture of lightning (didn't happen) . So I tried to take a picture of rain. LOL Rain is hard to photograph. So I got the clouds in the sky. The rain rolling off the roof. The wind tossed garden bench. Drops falling in a mud puddle. The stream we call the drive way. During all this, a humming bird very nearly flew into my face. Hence the underneath of the hummer at the feeder. I also caught him perched on the sunflowers. Poor Sugar tried to get away during the lull in the drops..... but she can't go too far.... the rogue photographer always gets her subject!
Have a great day!

Fabulous Homemade Bread

Submitted by: J. DruryRated: 5 out of 5 by 265 members
Yields: 72 servings

"Best Homemade Bread - 6 loaves in less than 3 hours! This is a variation of my mother Elaine's recipe. She is 75, and still makes hers by hand. I cheat and use a Bosch mixer, that's my time saver."

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup warm water
3 (.25 ounce) packages active
dry yeast
1/4 cup bread flour
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 cups quick cooking oats
2 cups whole wheat flour
4 1/2 cups warm water
1 1/2 tablespoons salt
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
10 cups bread flour

DIRECTIONS:

1. In the mixing bowl of an electric mixer, stir together 1/2 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/4 cup bread flour, and yeast. Let grow for about 5 minutes. It will bubble almost immediately.

2. Measure oats, 4 1/2 cups warm water, whole wheat flour, salt, 2/3 cup sugar, and 2/3 cup oil into the mixing bowl. Mix on low speed with a dough hook for 1 to 2 minutes. Increase speed slightly, and begin adding bread flour 1/2 to 1 cup at a time until dough pulls away from sides of bowl. Humidity determines how much flour you need before the bread pulls away from the edge of the bowl. It is normal for the dough to be sticky.

3. Place dough in an oiled bowl, and turn to coat the surface. Cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

4. Divide dough into 6 pieces. Shape loaves, and place in greased 8 x 4 inch pans. Let rise until dough is 1 inch above rim of pans, usually 1 hour.

5. Bake at 350 degrees F ( 175 degrees C) for 35 minutes, or until tops are browned. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Once Again!!! NO Genetically Modified Foods!!!!!!

Robynn.... thanks again for the information!

Robynn led me to an article at ZNet on what our government is forcing into the foods ~ not only in the US ~ but internationally as well. This article is about an agreement with Korea and importing food stuffs. *sniff sniff* I think I smell Monsanto!

Happy July 1st!

Around the homestead....
The farmer came and cut the winter rye fields adjacent to us to day. He really kicked up a good bit of dust. Sugar didn't like him messing around so close and was on guard all day!
After the garlic harvest, we needed a ground cover, so my sweetie planted rape seed. Boy, did it germinate fast. I love the gourds. The aquaponics is still turning out great lettuce, even in this heat. The last lonely strawberry flower in a bed of sun scorched plants! Poor thing!

My chicks....
They are still hillareous! That is Hilda on the left. Wings out, ready to leap of the roost. She is such a show off. The Bared Rocks are really pretty. All of them are growing so fast. And Stew(Stud), the rooster, likes to strut his stuff. I heard his first crow Sunday morning. The nine chicks we started with are still with us. 8 hens and 1 rooster... I expected more roosters. I feel we will probably get more eggs than what we know what to do with. Egg recipies anyone?

Did I ever tell you that I love sunflowers?
What would a summer post be with out my beautiful sunflowers!

Sugar says... "The paws are tired today, anyone care to give me a paw rub?"
Don't forget to check out the Bloggiversary, 100th post contest!
